WHY STEPHEN IS INNOCENT

No Motive whatsoever

If Steve had wanted to be with Rebecca Harris he could have walked out of the door at any time. Steve and Jaz had no children and Steve would have been entitled to half of whatever they had built up together.

Everyone who knows Steve and Jaz as a couple knows that Steve would never, ever in a million years have left Jaz, she was his rock in life, organised everything for them and looked after him.  He had affairs but Jaz was his wife, he knew the difference and so did Jaz.

Stephen and Jaz had a modest home, they worked hard but enjoyed life too and had very modest savings.  Anyone who knows Steve would know how amusing it would be to think of him as a money minded person. For example, he has never learned to drive, do you know anyone who is even slightly money minded who doesn't have a flashy car?  Steve didn't even have a car.  Friend after friend has a story to tell about Steve's generosity, if Steve was down to his last tenner he'd give you five of it with a smile on his face.

Many, many people wanted to testify for Steve's character at his trial, not one single witness was called on Stephen's behalf. The judge at the trial said that it seemed that Steve and Jaz had a loving marriage regardless of outside factors, anyone who knew them as a couple can testify to that.

Steve and Jaz's  right up to the minute CV's were found together in a bedroom drawer, they had been printed off as Steve and Jaz had been intending to apply for jobs together again.  Until recently they had always worked togther ever since they first met at work.

No texts were ever found saying 'Do it' or 'Just Do it' or anything like it -this is Harris's version of events

The media repeatedly reported that 'evidence showed' that Stephen had sent texts saying 'Do it' or 'Just Do it.  A legal point allows that the evidence of a co-defendant is evidence.  The only evidence that states that Stephen sent texts saying these words is the version of events as told by Rebecca Harris.

The telephone evidence shows that texts were sent from Stephen to Harris but not the content - this assertion has come only from her version of events

Timings impossible

For the texts that Harris sent to Stephen to have been referring to Jaz's murder, she would have had to get from Dyfatty lights to Steve and Jaz's house in 8 minutes as she was seen at the Dyfatty lights at 11.58pm.

There are roundabouts, traffic lights and speed cameras on the route.  She claims she stopped 4 times en route. Even the police could not do the journey in less than 11 minutes with no stops at all.  No speed cameras were triggered during her alleged journey.

It was literally impossible for her to have been where she said she was when those texts were sent. Not one of them mentioned murder or Jaz.

The 'Clincher' phone call

The phone call where Rebecca Harris said that Stephen said he would take her son as his own if she murdered Jaz  (again keep rememembering that the only 'evidence' for these words comes from Harris's version of events, the newspapers know this even though they reported it in such a way that it did not make this clear) did not appear on the phone records!  This is not an opinion, this is a fact.

Rebecca Harris changed her statements after reading Steve's

Harris did not give any of the detail of where Steve was or who he was with until after she had seen his statements. Amazing at it seems she was allowed to change her statements to add in detail she had read in his!    Yes, read that bit again, her original statements do not for example, mention that he had arranged to stay with Natalie Yemm, her subsequent statements insist that this was all part of a plan.

Steve's phone

Stephen walked into the police station with his phone, if he had been involved in any way surely he would have deleted his messages or thrown his phone in the river?  If he had been involved in any sort of plan it is even more certain that he would have done this.

The video which showed him and Harris involved in S&M activity was also on that phone and had been for months.  I think that it's fair to say that anyone planning anything illegal, never mind anything as terrible as what happened to Jaz , would have made sure that a video like that had been deleted or that the phone was at the bottom of the river.  Stephen did not.  Please see the page 'The Psychology' for more on how the showing of this video may have influenced the Jury.

Arranging the 118 night out

Harris gave testimony from the witness box that Steve had arranged the 118 night out as an alibi for himself  (she also says that they never thought about arranging an alibi for her!).   2 different witnesses who worked at 118 gave statements to say that they had arranged the night out.  The fact that it was called the 118 payday bash indicates that it was a regular event anyway and employees also testify to that.

Leave the door open for me

Steve sent Jaz a text asking her to leave the door open for him, he has testified that between them this meant 'leave the chain off'. If this was not true then why did Jaz not text or call to say 'have you lost your keys?' . Phone records show that she did not.

Harris says she had Steve's keys

Harris said that Steve gave her his house keys in case the text saying 'leave the door open for me' didn't work   (Please remember that Harris had seen all Steve's texts as part of the witness material  before giving all this detail). She goes on to say that she gave them back to Steve at lunchtime the next day (the Saturday) in the Kings Pub.  However she had seen Steve early that morning - one would think that if Steve had known about Jaz's murder he would have spent the whole time waiting for the police to arrive at his work or call him - you may think that he would have been very keen to have his house keys back in the morning rather than waiting until lunchtime.

Stephen was not given the opportunity to deny having given her the keys in the witness box, what she said, which he vehemently and consistently disputes, was allowed to stand.
